Of course the real stars of Logan's Run were the ultra cool vehicles which transported the Sandmen and the runners from location to location every week. The neeto vehicles were designed by Dean Jeferies Auto Styling (a neeto place to stop and peek through the fence when in Hollywood) Dean was responsible for a lot of the coolest movie vehicles.

Come to think of it the last time I was there the sandman car mold was still in out back. There were two Sandmen cars built for the TV series, though they only appear together in one episode. Originally they had planed to build a third Sandman 'groundcar' but when the series was cut short so was the order for a third car.

After production halted on the Logan's Run series these 'groundcars' popped up all over the place. In 1979 one showed up in an episode of CHiPS being driven way too fast by a lovely girl in a runner outfit. In 1981 one appeared as a Russian spacecraft in an episode of Showtime's 'Steambath' transporting a dead Cosmonaut to the afterlife. When Otherworld appeared on CBS both the Ground Car and the Solar Car were used in the pilot episode. After the Ground Cars were restyled one appeared (painted cherry red) in a series of Pepsi commercials (modifications shown at the bottom picture on the page; car on the left (now painted white). All of the vehicles made and appearance in Ice Pirates. (which also has other Logan's run props like Doc's operating table. Go rent it and see if you can spot all the old movie debris!) In Spaceballs one of the groundcars transports the princess and her android off the planet (modifications shown at the bottom picture on the page; car on the right). These vehicles have been in almost constant use in low budget movies (especially ones made by New Line Cinema)

The Solar Car even turned up in a video for Quiet Riot. And the Ground Car appeared in a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers video (which is on one of their laserdisks in the fast speed).

The door opening and locking mechanism in 1989. Note the panel covering where the lock light was. In the TV show there was a light indicating that the door was locked. As seen in Capture.

After the show ended someone took this shot before the vehicle was changed inot the Pepsi car. On the sides can still be seen the decals from the series. This picture was gathered from another web site. The owner did not respond to e-mails.

In the series they never really showed much of the interior of the vehicle except for shots showing the stars, so the steering wheel was rarely shown. Shown here are two pictures the smaller one is from the Logan's Run Annual and the other larger pictures shows the inside as it looked on the day I happened by with my camera.

Oh for a polarized lens....

On a episode of CHiP's about a 'chop shop' crooks were rounding up fancy cars. The episode starts when Ponch and Jon spot the DC Groundcar being driven by two runner girls running around the streets of LA. They follow them back to a auto body shop where Jon has a hard time making out the make and model on his ticket.

In the episode "A Visit From Urri" of Showtime's Steambath (a fantastic short lived comedy series based on the stage play) the Groundcar made a brief appearance as a Russian space craft with a dead cosmonaut arriving in the afterlife. In the series Jose Parez plays the supreme being (a Peurtirican Steambath attendant) and people who have recently died arrive in the Steambath. most pass on through a door to their final disposition. This allowed for a large number of guest stars. Robert Picardo played Tandy (shown on the right pic) who was one of the main characters on the series. You may better remember him form China Beach or as the Doctor in Star Trek Voyager. The series ran for one limited season.

In the pilot episode of CBS's Otherworld "Rules of Attraction" the family arrives in the Otherworld and the first person they encounter is driving a modified (on the interior) ground car, which they steal form a Zone Trooper. On they way to wherever the car is going the farther starts messing with the controls and looses control of the vehicle. This causes the Zone Trooper to pursue the family through the rest of the series as they stole his crystal which allows him access. overall this series was very interesting and if you have not seen it you should try to. Each episode they enter a different zone which houses a different culture (sound familiar?)

This is the Solar Car as seen from behind in the episode The Innocent. This picture shows off the twirling jets on the back of the car.

Shown below is Logan's Solar Vehicle. These pictures were taken in 1989 and 1990 before the car was restyled into a while blob like vehicle for some low-budget movie, removing any trace of what the vehicle originally looked like.. Before that final blob modification it had the back section removed so that a standing platform could carry military troops.

Recently the Logan cars were sold off to a collector in Belgum. However the Landmaster is still in Dean Jefferies wonderful car lot!

Still on display is the Landmaster from Damnation Alley. In my most recent trip to Hollywood I was lucky to get in and see the landmaster up close. Unfortunately the Logan cars apear to have been sold to a collector form Beljum. A cover has been bult over most of the lot keeping the rain off the Landmaster. The Landmaster was recently resotred to running order for use in Chris Elliot's TV series Get A Life. Check out my web page about the Landmaster!

Over the years I had heard that there were two groundcars. This turns not not to be the case. There was only one groundcar built. Articles about the show mention a second car, but it was never built. In the picture above on the left is the Groundcar. The one on the right (while similar) was built for Spaceballs. For that movie it did not even have a motor in it. Later a motor was added for other films and to drive it in parades The solarcraft was dis-assembled in 1990 to make it into a white blobby vehicle. I am not sure what it was used in after that.
